Lancaster County’s first deed was recorded in 1729. Since this time deeds have been a reliable record of a property chain linking historical owners to modern owners. Indexes provide the grantee (buyer) and seller (grantor) names, deed book reference, deed date, recording date, and property location. Please remember the following when searching:
Surname Spelling Variations: may have been recorded with different spellings
Recording Date: Deeds may have been recorded much later than when the deed was drawn up so your search may extend index timeframes.
Search Tip: Indexes are organized by the first few letters of the surname and by the first letter of the given name. Use the bookmark feature within the index to quickly navigate to the appropriate surname section and scroll to the appropriate given name section. Deed Book volumes consist of letters and/or numbers. A through Z is Volume 1, AA through ZZ is Volume 2 and 1 through 25 is Volume 4. All subsequent Deed Book volumes are designated by a single letter and number combination. There are no letter “J” or “V” Deed Book volumes.
